My mother’s old Corolla needs a battery and her pension is small, what should I buy? - godfreylane - 10-20-2026

I am helping my mother with her car this week, and I want to get it right because money is really limited for her. She has a 2009 Toyota Corolla with about 230,000 kilometers, and she only uses it for the market, the clinic and visiting my aunt. Yesterday it would not start in front of the clinic, and a stranger had to jump it so she could get home. The battery is so old that none of us can remember when it was changed. My uncle says to buy the cheapest one in the shop, because the car is old and it is not worth spending more. My cousin says a very cheap battery will fail in one summer and then she will be stuck again, maybe somewhere worse. I do not want my mother stranded alone, so I am leaning toward the safer choice, but I also do not want to waste her money. I read a page from a workshop in Sharjah about this brand, and it explained the sizes, the warranty and how a proper job should include a charging test, which helped me see that the right size and a fair warranty matter more than I thought. Since we live near the industrial area, I typed Affordable Dagenite battery replacement near Industrial Area 11 into my phone one evening, mostly to see what the usual price range is for a small sedan like hers. So here is what I want to ask. What is a fair price for a basic battery for an old Corolla, and how long should it last if she drives only short trips? Is it normal for a shop to give a discount when you hand back the old battery? Also, does the shop usually test the alternator for free, so we know the new battery will not get damaged? One more thing, short trips are all she does, so does that wear a battery down faster, and should she take a longer drive once in a while? If you helped a parent with the same problem, please tell me what you chose and how long it lasted. Thanks everyone.
